The word governess conjures images of Victorian England — a stern figure in black presiding over a schoolroom. The reality in 2026 is quite different. Today’s governess is a highly qualified education professional, chosen by discerning families who want more for their children than a standard school or a standard nanny can provide.

The Traditional Governess
Historically, a governess was employed by wealthy families to educate their children at home. She was responsible for academic instruction, languages, music, and deportment. She lived with the family, occupied an unusual social position — neither servant nor equal — and had near-total responsibility for her charges’ intellectual development.
That model shaped the role we still recognise today. Many of its core features remain: live-in placement, broad educational responsibility, and close integration with family life.
The Modern Governess
The 21st-century governess is typically a qualified teacher — often with a PGCE or QTS — who works exclusively with one family. Her remit today typically covers:
Academic Education
Delivering the national curriculum or international equivalent (IB, Cambridge), managing home-schooling or supplementing school attendance.
Languages
Many modern governesses are bilingual or multilingual, providing immersive language education as part of daily life — French, Mandarin and Arabic most commonly requested.
Extracurricular Development
Coordinating activities, tutoring in music or arts, managing the child’s broader educational schedule and enrichment programme.
Travel & Continuity
Accompanying families on extended travel or relocations, ensuring educational continuity wherever the family is based.
Who Hires a Governess Today?
The governess has always been the preserve of families who can afford — and who value — a truly bespoke education. Today that means UHNW households: families in finance and private equity, royal and noble families, prominent entrepreneurial families, and international families living across multiple countries.
- Families whose children travel too frequently for consistent school attendance
- Children with specific learning needs that benefit from one-to-one teaching
- Families who want their children educated in a second language from an early age
- Households where privacy and discretion are paramount

What Qualifications Should a Governess Have?
At minimum, a qualified governess should hold a recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS, or equivalent international certification). Many hold degrees from leading universities and specialist subject expertise. At EED, we place only teaching-qualified governesses — it is non-negotiable.
