A homeschooling governess is a unique role that demands both exceptional educational credentials and the personal qualities to manage a child’s full academic development independently — often in an international context, and without the support structures of a conventional school.

What Does a Homeschooling Governess Do?

A homeschooling governess takes primary responsibility  for a child’s education within a given private household. Unlike a supplementary governess (who generally supports children attending school), a homeschooling governess delivers the full curriculum — planning lessons, setting objectives, tracking progress and managing the child’s entire educational journey.

Curriculum Design & Delivery

Designing and delivering a full home education programme aligned to the British National Curriculum, IGCSE, IB or the family’s own educational philosophy.

All Core Subjects

Planning, structure and assessment across English, mathematics, sciences, humanities and languages — with specialist subject knowledge at senior level where required.

School Entry Preparation

Preparing children for 7+, 11+, 13+, Common Entrance and A-level (or equivalents) where re-entry to mainstream school is planned — with sustained, structured support.

Language Instruction

Option for bilingual or multilingual education programmes — French, Mandarin, Spanish and others. Many families combine home education with language immersion.

Home education and UK law: In the United Kingdom, parents have a legal right to educate their children at home. There is no requirement to follow the National Curriculum, though many families choose to do so — particularly where re-entry to mainstream school is planned. EED’s homeschooling governesses can advise on curriculum approach based on the child’s age, needs and future educational objectives.

Qualifications & Salary

A homeschooling governess is a qualified educator. EED’s candidates typically hold QTS or equivalent, a degree in a relevant subject, and substantial experience delivering home education or teaching in leading independent schools. Many also hold PGCE qualifications and have experience preparing children for competitive entry to the UK’s most selective schools.

Salary range: Given the full scope of educational responsibility, homeschooling governesses command salaries at the upper end of the governess scale — typically £55,000–£90,000+ gross per annum, depending on qualifications, languages and curriculum complexity.
