What Affects Governess & Nanny Salaries?
Qualifications
A PGCE, QTS or strong academic degree adds significant value — particularly for governess roles. Oxbridge and leading university graduates command the highest premiums.
Languages
Native-level fluency in a second language commands a consistent premium of £10,000–£25,000+. French, Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish are the most requested.
Private Household Experience
Prior experience with UHNW families is highly valued. Candidates who have operated successfully in high-expectation, high-discretion households attract a market premium.
Rota & Travel
Roles involving rotation or extensive international travel are remunerated at a significant premium. Sole charge responsibility and multiple residence requirements are also reflected in salary.
Employer costs to consider: Employer National Insurance contributions (currently 13.8% on earnings above the secondary threshold), PAYE administration and auto-enrolment pension contributions all apply to household employees. EED strongly recommends working with a specialist household payroll provider and can provide introductions on request.
